Mathew 5:3
Introduction:
Some general observations concerning the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount;
1. What does it mean to be “poor in spirit”?
2. Why is it a blessing to be poor in spirit?
Because the poor is spirit finds God is their help!
Because they are given entrance into the kingdom of heaven with all its privileges;
The power of the kingdom
The fruit of the kingdom
The riches of the kingdom
3. What can we do?
Ways to determine if you are poor in spirit:
Do you find yourself consistently critical of others, while rarely being critical of yourself? Do you wonder why others don’t live up to your standards?
Do you pray?
How does one become poor in spirit?
Not by trying on your own, but by looking to God who has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ. When God graciously gives us a glimpse of Himself, it causes us to know how incapable and inadequate we truly are. It makes us poor in spirit, and causes us to seek mercy and forgiveness from Jesus Christ.
